Mina Yakubu

Student Commissioner

Mina is a second-year J.D. Candidate at New York University School of Law, where she is a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar and Birnbaum Women’s Leadership Fellow. At NYU, she serves as Co-President of the African Law Association, Co-Chair of Law Students for Human Rights, and Managing Editor for the Review of Law and Social Change. Mina is also a Law Student Advocate in the Legal Empowerment and Judicial Independence Clinic, where she supports the work of the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers.



She previously worked at the NYU Center for Human Rights & Global Justice, Legal Aid Commission Ghana, Center for American Progress, and was a Fellow at the United Nations International Law Commission. She is passionate about international law and human rights advocacy, with a focus on African and African diasporic communities.



She holds a B.A. in Political Science and African, African American, and Diaspora Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her free time, Mina enjoys reading, listening to music, and exploring the outdoors.
